Expedition Africa 2019, Rodrigues.

Wednesday September 4th.

It’s an adventure of the soul, numerous emotions, the mind and the body.

Adventure Racing encompasses them all.

It was a day of high emotions at the world of Expedition Africa 2019 Rodrigues today.

The top three teams graced the finish line; Swedish team Greener Adventure Cyckelkraft, followed closely by the Russians Team Blizzard, and just a few hours later we welcomed in the first of the South African teams, Team Merrell Adventure Addicts.

Hugs, tears, ecstatic family members, exhausted and solidly stoked teams.

At 6am this morning Craig Giese and I legged it over to see these top three teams pretty much neck for neck, (or paddle stroke for paddle stroke), as they hit the shore and headed off on foot with their climbing gear, to the via ferrata and abseil, then more biking, trekking, swimming, paddling, and a three kilometre Stand-Up-Paddle board to finish.

With a comfortable bed, a good feed satisfying drink, and family and friends in their sights, they gave it their absolute all.

I couldn’t help but take a moment to reflect as I watched each team sitting afterwards, a spread of treats and drinks laid out before them, next to the glistening swimming pool at Cocotiers Hotel. For three days or more they’d been grafting so hard, pushing every part of their physical and mental capacities. And then they’re here, humble smiles on their faces, contently chatting amongst themselves and to fellow supporters.

And this 350km around this majestical island in the middle of the Indian Ocean has certainly not been their first rodeo. Adventure Racing is a fierce drug that can’t be given up.

Simultaneously, there are 57 teams still out on the course, (minus one or two who had to pull pin early).

Exactly like the winning teams, they too are taking their souls, emotions, minds and bodies on an adventure.

They too have been giving this race their absolute all, so much looking forward to that comfortable bed, good food, drink, and loved ones.

Whether it be the front of the field or the back, the spirit of adventure racing does not change.

As we watch the finish line being shadowed by each team over the next couple of days, we appreciate their journey, appreciate the sacrifices they make while out on that course.

They will then sit by the glistening pool, enjoying a spread of treats. On their faces will be a humble smile and look of satisfaction - a mere crack open of the door into a world into which we as media crew are lucky enough to get just a peek.
